How to Choose a Newborn Photographer: 7 Things Every Parent Should Know

Choosing a newborn photographer can feel overwhelming. Every website seems to feature adorable babies, glowing reviews, and beautiful images, making it difficult to know who is truly the right fit for your family. If you're beginning your search, take a look at my Raleigh newborn photography experience to see what a full session looks like. Before you make your decision, though, there are a few things I think every parent should know.

After photographing newborns for more than 19+ years, I've learned something that surprises many families: the photographs themselves are only half of the experience. The way you feel during your session—the confidence you have in the person handling your baby, the calm atmosphere, and the trust you build—often becomes just as memorable as the images you take home.

1. Look Beyond the Highlight Reel

It's easy to fall in love with a photographer's Instagram feed. After all, everyone shares their very best images online.

But here's something I've learned after photographing more than 400 newborn sessions: a great photographer isn't defined by their best nine photos.

They're defined by their consistency.

One of the smartest questions you can ask is:

"Can I see a complete newborn gallery?"

A full gallery tells you so much more than social media ever can.

You'll see sleepy babies, awake babies, family portraits, sibling moments, tiny details, and everything in between. You'll also see whether the photographer consistently delivers beautiful work from beginning to end—not just a handful of standout images.

That's a much better reflection of the experience you can expect.

2. Experience Shows Up When Things Don't Go According to Plan

If there's one thing newborns have taught me over the last 19 years, it's this:

They don't read the schedule.

Some babies sleep the entire session.

Some would rather stretch, yawn, and study every corner of the room.

Others decide they're hungry every twenty minutes.

And all of those babies are completely normal.

Parents often apologize when their baby cries or refuses to settle, but honestly, that's simply part of photographing newborns.

Experience isn't about getting every baby into the same pose.

It's about recognizing what this baby needs in this moment and adjusting the session around them.

Ironically, some of my favorite photographs over the years have come from moments that weren't part of the original plan—a tiny yawn, an unexpected smile, or a curious pair of eyes staring straight into the camera.

Those are the moments families remember.

3. Choose a Style You'll Love Twenty Years From Now

Photography trends come and go.

I've watched them change many times over nearly two decades.

Highly stylized editing.

Bold colors.

Complicated props.

Overly trendy poses.

Some of those styles are beautiful for a season, but timeless photography isn't about following trends. It's about preserving the feeling of this chapter in your family's life.

When you're comparing photographers, ask yourself one simple question:

"Will I still love these images when my baby graduates from high school?"

The photographs that stand the test of time usually have one thing in common—they focus on connection instead of trends.

Tiny fingers wrapped around yours.

A sleepy stretch.

The way your baby fits perfectly against your shoulder.

Those moments never go out of style.

4. The Experience Matters Just as Much as the Photographs

This is something many parents don't think about until they're in the middle of their session.

By the time your newborn photos take place, you'll probably be running on very little sleep. You'll still be adjusting to life with a brand-new baby, learning feeding schedules, and wondering if you'll ever drink a hot cup of coffee again.

The last thing you need is to feel rushed.

A newborn session should never feel like checking boxes on a timeline. There should be plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and simply taking a breath.

I've found that the most relaxed parents almost always end up with the most natural photographs. When you're not worrying about the clock, it's much easier to settle into those quiet moments that become your favorite images.

One of the comments I hear most often after a session is, "That was so much easier than I expected."

That's exactly how it should feel.

5. Reviews Tell You More Than Star Ratings

Five-star reviews are wonderful, but don't stop there.

Read what people actually say.

Do they talk about feeling comfortable?

Did they mention that the photographer was patient?

Did they say they never felt rushed?

Did they mention how their baby was handled?

Those are the reviews that tell you what your own experience is likely to be.

Beautiful photographs are important, but so is spending several hours with someone during one of the biggest life transitions you'll ever experience.

If family after family describes the session as calm, enjoyable, and stress-free, that's usually a very good sign.

6. Ask Questions Most Parents Never Think to Ask

Once you've narrowed your search down to a few photographers, don't be afraid to ask questions. The answers will tell you far more than a portfolio ever could.

Can I see a complete newborn gallery?

A highlight reel is wonderful, but a complete gallery shows consistency. You'll see how the photographer handles family portraits, awake babies, sleepy babies, siblings, and all the little moments in between.

What happens if my baby won't sleep?

This is one of the biggest worries for new parents, and it's a great question to ask. An experienced newborn photographer won't panic if your baby stays awake. They'll adapt the session, follow your baby's cues, and still create beautiful images.

How do you approach newborn safety?

Safety should always come before getting a particular pose. Ask how the photographer supports babies during the session and whether they let the baby's comfort guide the experience.

What's included in the session?

Every photographer works differently. Some provide wraps, blankets, headbands, and styling, while others ask families to bring everything themselves. Knowing what's included helps you compare the overall experience—not simply the price.

What do families say about working with you?

Reviews often reveal something a portfolio can't. Look for comments about how relaxed the session felt, how the photographer interacted with the baby, and whether parents felt genuinely cared for.

After photographing more than 400 newborns, I've learned something that surprises many parents:

They almost never remember whether every pose went perfectly.

They remember how they felt.

Did they enjoy those few quiet hours?

Did they feel comfortable handing their baby to someone else?

Did they leave feeling like they had just spent the morning with a trusted friend instead of attending another appointment?

Those are the memories that last just as long as the photographs.

7. Trust Your Instincts

Sometimes two photographers look equally talented.

Their portfolios are beautiful.

Their reviews are excellent.

Their pricing is similar.

At that point, trust your instincts.

Choose the photographer whose work makes you feel something.

Choose the one whose personality helps you relax.

Choose the one whose approach feels right for your family.

Because when you feel comfortable, your baby usually does too—and that calm, connected feeling has a way of showing up in every photograph.

Why Families Choose Michelle Gunton Photography

For more than 19+ years, I've had the privilege of photographing growing families throughout Raleigh, Wake Forest, Youngsville, and the surrounding Triangle. During that time, I've photographed over 400 newborn sessions, and one thing has never changed: every baby is wonderfully different.

My approach is always baby-led. There's no rushing, no forcing poses, and no pressure to stick to a rigid timeline. We simply follow your baby's cues, take breaks whenever they're needed, and create a calm environment where everyone can relax.

My goal isn't just to deliver beautiful photographs. It's to preserve what these first days actually felt like—the tiny stretches, sleepy cuddles, proud new parents, and all the little moments that disappear far too quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early should I start looking for a newborn photographer?

The best time to begin your search is during your second trimester. Many newborn photographers book due dates months in advance, so reaching out before your baby arrives gives you the best chance of reserving a spot while still allowing flexibility around your actual delivery date.

Should I choose a photographer based on price?

Price is certainly part of the decision, but it shouldn't be the only factor. Experience, consistency, safety, editing style, and the overall experience often have a much bigger impact on how you feel about your photographs years from now.

Is it okay if my baby is older than two weeks?

Absolutely. While many newborn sessions take place within the first two weeks after birth, beautiful images can still be created with older babies. An experienced newborn photographer will simply adjust the session based on your baby's age and personality.

What should I look for in a newborn photographer's portfolio?

Look beyond a handful of beautiful images. Ask to see a complete gallery so you can evaluate consistency, family portraits, awake and sleepy babies, and how the photographer tells the story of an entire session.

Can parents and siblings be included in newborn photos?

Yes. In fact, many of the photographs families treasure most are the ones that include parents and siblings. These images capture the connection between your growing family and often become favorites for years to come.

What if my baby cries or won't sleep?

That's completely normal. Every baby has their own personality and rhythm. A calm, experienced photographer will work around your baby's needs, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, cuddling, and breaks without making anyone feel rushed.

The Right Photographer Should Give You Confidence

Choosing a newborn photographer isn't just about finding someone whose work you admire. It's about finding someone you trust during one of the most meaningful and emotional seasons of your life.

When you look back at these photographs years from now, you probably won't remember whether your baby slept through the entire session or whether every tiny detail went according to plan. You'll remember how impossibly small they were, how they fit perfectly in your arms, and how quickly those first days disappeared.

Find a photographer whose experience gives you confidence, whose style feels timeless, and whose approach allows you to simply slow down and enjoy this chapter. Those are the things that make beautiful photographs even more meaningful.
