4. The Experience Matters Just as Much as the Photographs
This is something many parents don't think about until they're in the middle of their session.
By the time your newborn photos take place, you'll probably be running on very little sleep. You'll still be adjusting to life with a brand-new baby, learning feeding schedules, and wondering if you'll ever drink a hot cup of coffee again.
The last thing you need is to feel rushed.
A newborn session should never feel like checking boxes on a timeline. There should be plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and simply taking a breath.
I've found that the most relaxed parents almost always end up with the most natural photographs. When you're not worrying about the clock, it's much easier to settle into those quiet moments that become your favorite images.
One of the comments I hear most often after a session is, "That was so much easier than I expected."
That's exactly how it should feel.
5. Reviews Tell You More Than Star Ratings
Five-star reviews are wonderful, but don't stop there.
Read what people actually say.
Do they talk about feeling comfortable?
Did they mention that the photographer was patient?
Did they say they never felt rushed?
Did they mention how their baby was handled?
Those are the reviews that tell you what your own experience is likely to be.
Beautiful photographs are important, but so is spending several hours with someone during one of the biggest life transitions you'll ever experience.
If family after family describes the session as calm, enjoyable, and stress-free, that's usually a very good sign.
6. Ask Questions Most Parents Never Think to Ask
Once you've narrowed your search down to a few photographers, don't be afraid to ask questions. The answers will tell you far more than a portfolio ever could.
Can I see a complete newborn gallery?
A highlight reel is wonderful, but a complete gallery shows consistency. You'll see how the photographer handles family portraits, awake babies, sleepy babies, siblings, and all the little moments in between.
What happens if my baby won't sleep?
This is one of the biggest worries for new parents, and it's a great question to ask. An experienced newborn photographer won't panic if your baby stays awake. They'll adapt the session, follow your baby's cues, and still create beautiful images.
How do you approach newborn safety?
Safety should always come before getting a particular pose. Ask how the photographer supports babies during the session and whether they let the baby's comfort guide the experience.
What's included in the session?
Every photographer works differently. Some provide wraps, blankets, headbands, and styling, while others ask families to bring everything themselves. Knowing what's included helps you compare the overall experience—not simply the price.
What do families say about working with you?
Reviews often reveal something a portfolio can't. Look for comments about how relaxed the session felt, how the photographer interacted with the baby, and whether parents felt genuinely cared for.
After photographing more than 400 newborns, I've learned something that surprises many parents:
They almost never remember whether every pose went perfectly.
They remember how they felt.
Did they enjoy those few quiet hours?
Did they feel comfortable handing their baby to someone else?
Did they leave feeling like they had just spent the morning with a trusted friend instead of attending another appointment?
Those are the memories that last just as long as the photographs.
7. Trust Your Instincts
Sometimes two photographers look equally talented.
Their portfolios are beautiful.
Their reviews are excellent.
Their pricing is similar.
At that point, trust your instincts.
Choose the photographer whose work makes you feel something.
Choose the one whose personality helps you relax.
Choose the one whose approach feels right for your family.
Because when you feel comfortable, your baby usually does too—and that calm, connected feeling has a way of showing up in every photograph.
