The Best Locations for Maternity Photos in Raleigh, NC

One of the first questions I get from expecting mamas is: where should we shoot? And it's a great question — because location makes up about half of what makes a maternity gallery feel truly special. After 19 years photographing families across Raleigh, Wake Forest, Youngsville, Rolesville, and the surrounding area, I've shot in a lot of spots — and I have strong opinions about which ones actually photograph beautifully versus which ones just look nice when you're standing there.

1. My Studio in Youngsville, NC — The Year-Round Option

Before we get into outdoor locations, I have to lead with this: most of my maternity sessions happen right in my studio at 340 Thornwood Lane in Youngsville, just north of Raleigh — and for good reason.

North Carolina summers are brutal. We’re talking 95 degrees, 90% humidity, and mosquitoes that have absolutely no respect for your flowing maternity gown. For a mama who is already running warm and exhausted at 30 weeks pregnant, an outdoor session in July is not the vibe.

2. Dorothea Dix Park — Raleigh

If I had to pick one outdoor location in Raleigh for maternity photos, Dorothea Dix is probably it. Wide open fields, sweeping views of the downtown skyline, and the kind of golden hour light that makes everything glow — it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful spots in the city.

Dix Park is especially stunning in spring when the wildflowers are in bloom and in fall when the grasses turn that warm golden color. Sessions here tend to feel cinematic and expansive — the kind of images where you’re small against a big, beautiful landscape and it just works.

One thing to know: it’s a popular park, so you won’t have it to yourself. We time sessions for golden hour on weekday evenings when it’s less crowded and the light is at its best.

3. JC Raulston Arboretum — Raleigh

The arboretum is one of my personal favorites because of the sheer variety it offers. Lush gardens, canopied pathways, open grassy areas, and incredible plant diversity — all within minutes of NC State and downtown Raleigh.

Sessions at the arboretum tend to produce galleries with a timeless, editorial quality. The dappled light through the tree canopy in late afternoon is particularly beautiful. Note that the arboretum requires a photography permit for professional sessions — something I handle in advance.

4. Fayetteville Street & Market Hall — Downtown Raleigh

Not every mama wants fields and trees — and that’s completely valid. Downtown Raleigh has a genuinely beautiful urban character, and Fayetteville Street and the cobblestone surroundings of Market Hall offer something totally different: texture, architecture, and a modern editorial feel that photographs incredibly well.

The warm brick tones, historic building facades, and quiet side streets around Market Hall create a backdrop that feels personal and specific — not like every other maternity gallery on Instagram. For couples who love the city, this is a beautiful option. Downtown sessions work best in early morning or late evening when foot traffic is lower and the light is softer.

5. E. Carroll Joyner Park — Wake Forest

If you’re based in Wake Forest or north of Raleigh, Joyner Park is a beautiful option that keeps travel time short. Rolling meadows, a wooden bridge, mature tree lines, and open grassy areas make this one of the most versatile outdoor locations in the area.

It photographs beautifully in every season and tends to be quieter than Raleigh parks. The meadow areas particularly shine in fall when the light turns warm and golden. If you’re specifically looking for a Wake Forest maternity photographer, Joyner Park is often the first location I suggest for outdoor sessions.

6. Open Fields Near Louisburg, NC

This one is a little off the beaten path — and that’s exactly what makes it special. The open fields and meadows surrounding Louisburg have produced some of my most breathtaking maternity galleries. Wide sky, natural grasses, complete quiet, and the kind of sweeping golden hour light you simply can’t find in a city park.

7. Your Home

Underrated. Deeply personal. Genuinely beautiful when done right.

There’s something about being photographed in the space where you’ve been nesting — decorating the nursery, folding tiny clothes, imagining what life is about to look like — that produces images with an emotional depth outdoor sessions sometimes can’t touch.
